Horse and dogs

I can`t find anywhere if my pets are affected by bankruptcy. I have 2 horses (one that was willed to me by a friend) and 3 dogs. All are like kids to me and I would never let anyone take them. I have read through the Ontario info and don`t see anywhere if they are exempt? Thanks T

There is no exemption for “pets” in any province. You are entitled to an exemption for “personal property” worth up to $5650 in Ontario. If your pets have a high monetary value (I realize they have high personal value to you) then you may have to pay an additional amount in order to file for bankruptcy.

A bigger question that begs asking – can you afford to keep all of your “kids”? You might be doing them and you a favour by finding good homes for a few of them to lessen the financial burden on yourself… You probably don’t want to hear this, but it is sometihng you should consider.
