Ex husband wants to file for bankruptcy

Hi, I`m a single mom and have been separated for 2 years. My issue is that my ex wants to file bankruptcy with his common law girlfriend. How will this affect me?? We are not legally divorced. He does pay half of the car loan(I have the car) and we had a furniture credit card with both of our names. However, I`ve been the one paying it. When he files will they take my possessions?? Am I forced to file bankruptcy; as well.

There shouldn’t be any real impact if your ex files a bankruptcy, especially considering that you are the only one who is paying the furniture card. Technically he will be released from any legal responsibility on that card and you will be left as solely responsible, but if your already paying it, there really isn’t any change. If you had any other joint debt or joint assets it may become an issue, but in the absence of those things you really don’t need to worry.
