Money from wedding social

My fiance and I live in Manitoba. I have just filed for bankruptcy. In Manitoba, it is somewhat traditional to have a wedding social prior to the wedding – our social is planned for the summer. The idea of the social is to help pay for the cost of the wedding. Will we be allowed to keep this money for our wedding in the fall?

You are required to report any gifts that you receive to your trustee – your trustee may consdier these gifts a “windfall” and therefore has the right (some would argue an obligation) to seize those gifts for the benefit of your creditors. I suggest you go and speak to your trustee to determine how they intend to handle the situation.
