student loans/no income

I went bankrupt in 2000 at which time my student loans could not be included. I had started paying back my student loans after in went to collections and currently I owe approx. $8000. I moved back home and currently not employed. The reason being my mother who is employed in tourism is always away and we needed someone to stay at home and look after my grandmother. I had a rather uncomfortable conversation with the collection agency. They continued to call, but I stopped taking their calls because at this time, I cannot do anything. I received a letter stating that they were going to recommend the government to take legal action against me regarding the student loans. I`m not sure what to do. I am currently trying to look for part-time employment which would allow me to stay at home as much as possible and allow my mother to work to maintain the household. Since the government cannot garnish my wages because I don`t have one, what is the next step that they can take. It`s not that I don`t want to pay back the money I owe. I am stressed with all the doctors appts and it doesn`t help that I am hounded consistently by the collection agency. I am becoming very depressed and my anxiety attacks have started to come back. I just need to know what can I do to get them to back off just for a little while. Thank you.

One thing you may want to consider, assuming 10 years has now expired since you last attended school. If so you could contact a trustee or lawyer to see if they will make an application to court to request that your student loans now be discharged (as a result of the bankrutpcy). This is something that can be done after the fact, but you must understand that there is no guarantee that it will happen. However, based on your situation I think you would have a very good chance that the court would do so.
