Student Loan Deferred Payment

Upon finishing my studies in 1995, I applied and received deferred payments from the Quebec government for my student loan. Skip forward to 2002 when I took out a consolidated loan and paid off all my outstanding debt, student loan, credit cards, etc. In 2003 I filed bankruptcy and was discharged in 2004. My question, I am now receiving calls from a collection agency regarding my student loan. Am I still obligated to repay the Quebec government for the deferred student loan payments that they made on my behalf. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks…

To answer this I would have to review the agreement and terms of the actual defferal agreement. Although from the sounds of it is could very easily be a collection agent who simply hasn’t been properly informed.

The first thing I would do is provide the collection agent with copies of your bankruptcy and discharge documentation, as well as information that verifies the student loan was fully paid for. This may simply make this collector go away. If this isn’t successful you may then need to have this defferal agreement’s terms and conditions reviewed by a trustee or potentially an insolvency lawyer to determine if you need to make any payments.
