There are three different “discharges” that happen during a bankruptcy. The first is usually the person that filed for bankruptcy – when they are discharged it means they are no longer responsible to repay the debts included in their bankruptcy. The second if the discharge of the bankrupt’s debts. At some point your trustee will send formal notice to your creditors and a cheque for their share of whatever you had to pay into your bankruptcy – this causes the debts to be discharged. The final discharge is the trustee’s – once they have completed all the work on your bankruptcy the final act of the trustee is to become discharged from the file – this often happens many months after the bankrupt’s discharge.
