Tax returns for a bankrupt person

I heard that a trustee files two tax returns for an undischarged bankrupt, one when the bankruptcy takes place and the other at the end of the year the bankruptcy is finished. Is this correct? Depending on the timing, could the discharge after nine months of bankruptcy for a first time bankrupt be delayed, waiting for the final tax return to be processed?

You are correct, in a bankruptcy your trustee will prepare a pre and a post bankruptcy tax return. However, as long as all your other duties are fulfilled, if your tax information is not available at the time for automatic discharge it will not hold up this discharge. However, if you don’t provide it your trustee will have to return to court to have your discharge annulled.
