Fewer than one person in 100 need to speak to a lawyer before they file for bankruptcy. Those that do usually have complex situations involving businesses or lawsuits. If you speak to a trustee and they think you need to speak to a lawyer they will tell you so – trustees cannot provide legal advice (since we’re not lawyers) so when a situation arises that needs a lawyer’s opinion your trustee will tell you that.
Of course you have the right to consult with a lawyer anytime you want to (assuming you can apy their fee), but since lawyers cannot file bankruptcy most people go straight to a trustee.
