Very confused
February 13th, 2012 by Questions
I have a chronic illness but worked two jobs prior to my last surgery. Due to complications, I have been out of work and now collect income assistance. My disability insurance on my mortgage expired, now all of the bills are behind. I found your site, called for an evaluation, then was told that I don’t have enough income for a consumer proposal. My question now is whether I am able to file bankruptcy? This was not my first option, but what does it mean not to have enough income to try to get my debts in order? I thought that was what the whole program was for.

I am sorry to hear you are frustrated. I will try to clear things up for you. A consumer proposal is designed for people who can afford to pay a portion of their debt. So to do so you have to be able to afford to make a reasonable offer to the creditors. If you are in a position where your income is tight, then likely a bankruptcy is the direction you should go.
