engaged in alberta

February 16th, 2011 by Questions

I\’m a small business operator in Alberta engaged to a person in BC. Hes accrued about $70K in debt due to a bad business partner leaving them hanging. The material posessions are almost nil and they are unable to work full time due to a permanent disability We\’ve been holding off the marriage til we know whats best.!! If he files for bankruptcy before or after we\’re married will I be marked with or responsible for his debt load in his bankruptcy? Will he be regarded as dependant in case I apply for credit or mortage? Is it best for us for him to file before or after maarriage?

If your fiance files for bankruptcy there won’t be any impact on your credit nor will you be responsible for his bankruptcy or his debt load. This holds true if you are singe, engaged, married, common law etc. Marital status and responsibility for debt or separate issues. So when he files a bankruptcy or when you to decide to get married really makes no difference.
