If I move in with my girlfriend then declare bankruptcy is she liable in any way?
August 18th, 2010 by Questions
I have debt that needs to be resolved through bankruptcy. My girlfriend owns a house, vehicle etc. If I move in with her prior to filing for bankruptcy is she at all held liable in any way? She had a bankruptcy 7 years ago and has rebuilt her credit, don`t want to jeopardize what she has worked hard to reattain…

Moving in with your girlfirend and then filing for bankruptcy will not have any impact on her credit – unless she has co-signed or guaranteed your debts. Living with her may impact the amount you are required to pay into your bankruptcy – the cost to file depends on the number of people living in your household and the total income coming into the hosuehold.
You might want to meet and dicsuss with a trustee BEFORE you move in, just so you can see how the numbers work (and what you will have to pay).
