If a couple are legally separated, but still have debts together how does this effect the other when one files for bankruptcy?

When you have signed on a debt, regardless of who else has signed on the debt, you are legally responsible regardless of what happens to the other party. So if you filed for bankruptcy then your ex would be responsible to ensure the debt is paid in full as originally contracted.
