late payments
I have been considering bankruptcy for the past several months. It has now gotten to the point that I have fallen 1 month behind in payments to my credit cards with only 1 late payment previous to this one. The creditor is now calling my home. So far I have managed to avoid the call but don’t really want to ignore them. Is there anything you can suggest that I tell them? I don’t want to lie and make an arrangement to pay when I’m going to file for bankruptcy soon. Do I tell them I’m preparing to file? I live in Ontario.

What ever you do just make sure you are upfront with the bill collectors. This typically makes things a lot cleaner and you never have to worry as to whether your actions will have negative consequenses. As well, when you make a commitment to the collectors, keep it. This can be as simple as telling them you are going to discuss things with a trustee or when a payment is going to be made. If you can’t keep the commitment give them a courtesy call.
By insuring that you always treat the collectors in a courteous and fair fashion you will be much better off than those who don’t. At the same time, don’t avoid the call, be up front.
