Creditors calling 6 years later

My husband and I have been married for a year, recently we have been getting collection letters for a Visa he didn’t pay for in 2000. It is now 2007. I asked him about it and he said he hasn’t had contact with them in the last 5 years. Can this affect my credit? How long after a debt is owed can they try to collect?

As long as you have not signed on any of your husbands debts, nor played a role in running up the outstanding balances, you don’t have to worry about being held responsible for his debts.

However, the rules associated with a debt expiring vary between provinces, so to determine the answer to your second question you are best to contact a local trustee. Although, you will find that in most instances as long as the creditor or their agent has made some collection attempts (i.e. sent an invoice), even if these attempts have been directed at an old address they have on file, then the debt is still owed. So you will find in most instances a debt doesn’t simply go away.
