Not released from first bankruptcy , now need to file again.

I filed for bankruptcy 7 years ago, and was unable to pay the fees. I again have to file for bankruptsy, but was told that I had not been released from the first one, and had to be before I could file for a second time. (not released because of the non payment sine die) I can not afford to pay for the old one and this one. Is there a way I can go to the courts and seek discharge from my first bankruptsy on my own.

Thanks for your time and expertise.
Peace from Alberta

Yes, you could make a motion in the bankruptcy court to have your first bankruptcy discharged. Typically you must serve notice on the original trustee, who is then able to make comments in court as well. Your best option is to contact your original trustee to determine if you can reach some arrangement with them to discharge your first bankruptcy.
