debt collector’s rights

I am wondering if collection agencies and/or the creditors themselves have the right to call my relatives such as my parents about my debt or are they required by law to deal directly with me and no one else?

Anyone collecting the debt is bound by provincial regulations as to what they are or are not able to do. While I am not familiar with every province, the majority of them permit a collection agent or creditor to call your employer or relatives to verify you contact information, present employer etc.. Unfortunately, there are some situations where the collectors do not adhere to these directions and in those cases the best course of action for you to take is to first discuss your concerns with the manager responsible for the agent in question; and if this doesn’t help to rectify things you can contact the provincial authority responsible for consumer protection.
