There is a registry kept by the Superintendent of Bankruptcy that is accessible by the public and for a fee they can search to see if anyone has filed a bankruptcy. There is limited information that is contained in the registry (i.e. name, birth date, date of bankruptcy, date of discharge, total amount of liabilities, trustee responsible…). In some types of bankruptcies (typically when dealing with a commercial entity) that notice has to be published in a newspaper, but this is exceptionally rare when dealing with individuals.

For more specifics on this and to perhaps even see what information is contained by this registry should contact a licensed trustee in your area and he will be able to provide as much detail as you require.
