My Innocent Sister
I just stumbled upon this site yesterday and I love it. I’ve learned so much after only reading a couple of hours. Way to go people on making a very informative site! So anyway, basically I’m in credit debt and can’t go through with even the monthly payments. I live in Taiwan and am thinking about claiming bankruptcy when I return to Canada (whenever that may be). This would be the right choice but then I remembered that I have an American Express card in which my sister also has a card on the same account. She’s living in Canada and she’s never ever used the card. My question is this, if I stop making payments to American Express, will they start hounding her in Canada to pay money on an account she’s never used? If so, then I can make minimum payments to them but I honestly cannot afford to pay anything else to anyone. Eventually I may be able to pay off this one card. However, I’m too far in debt to pay the others. I’m sure that bankruptcy is the only answer now. What have you got for me? (P.S. did I mention your site rocks?)

Were glad you found this site helpful, if you have any suggestions we are always looking for ways to improve. As for your questions, if you file bankruptcy your sister will be responsible to pay this debt in full. Now this wouldn’t happen immediately as she could probably make arrangements to pay this over time, but ultimately she will be held responsible. This same thing will happen if you stop making the payments on this account. In the mean time if you simply make the minimum payment there shouldn’t be any immediate issues.
