understanding bankruptcy – what do I keep if I go bankrupt?

I have been reading alot of the questions posted and can’t seem to find the answer to this one question. If my husband and myself file for bankruptcy do they take household items from you (ie television, furniture etc) our vehicles which are not new but paid for? I don’t quite understand what it all means.

Thank you

Certain items are exempt from seizure if you file bankruptcy – they vary from province to province so you should look for information that relates specifically to the province in which you live. For example, the applicable law in Ontario is called the Executions Act – this details what cannot be taken from you (unless you have pledged the items as collateral for a debt).
