filing personal bankruptcy in Canada

My husband and I are considering filing bankruptcy. I lost my job over a year ago and we are falling way behind in our bills and credit cards. We have the opportunity to move to alberta for better work. We now live in Ontario. Can we move to Alberta and then file personal bankruptcy or do we have to file here in Ontario.

You may do either – in my opinion, it makes more sense to move to Alberta, get settled in to a new job and routine and then try and deal with your debts.

You may get lucky and find a high enough paying job that instead of filing bankruptcy you can offer your creditors a proposal or even a debt management plan.

If you do move, make certain you notify your creditors so that they can find you. If you don’t, they might take legal action against you and you will have no way of knowing that they did until it is too late.

Good luck with the move and with sorting out your financial problems.
