creditor collections on supplemental credit card

My girfriend and I broke up a few years ago .We didn’t live together but we were engaged for a number of years. My credit wasn’t great so she gave me a couple of supplemental cards .When we broke up the balance was no more than 50 dollars on the 2 cards.I cut up the cards soon after .I wasn’t taken off the account, which was my mistake .I can be forgetfull at times. She declared bankrutcy a few months ago after maxing out the cards . From posts I have read on your site they will come after me. I am worried that they will. How long do you think I have to wait to see if they want the money from me?
Is it unlikely they will do this after 6 months or so has passed. If they do I will need to go bankrupt I think.I put a lot of things on hold just to wait and see.I was going to buy I new car this year .How long do you think it would be before I could reasonably feel safe .I would call them and ask, if I didn’t think the call would be the spark to go after me .Great site thanks

Yes, I agree with you, it is likely the credit cards will pursue you for the joint debts. In most cases they will pursue you within six months. Generally the bankruptcy of one co-signer triggers them to pursue the other co-signer. However, if they have turned the account over to a collection agency, it could take longer for them to pursue you.

If you don’t want to call them, one option would be to get a copy of your credit report to see if these debts show on your credit report.

If you are very concerned about this, your best option may be to start saving money (in a new, separate bank account), and if they contact you, you will have some funds available to make a settlement for the balance owing.
