Legal fees

I hired a lawyer few years ago to deal with some legal matter (under 10k), we did not win at the end and the lawyer wants me to pay his bill. I owe him over 30k plus my loss of the 10k and I cannot afford the legal bill. I am thinking of filing bankruptcy, would it help me avoid paying the legal fees? Can the lawyer put me in jail or make my life living hill?

As long as the lawyer didn’t have you assing any property as collateral on the outsanding amount the will be treated as an unsecured creditor in a bankrutpcy and as a result of the Stay of Proceedings will have no ability to contact you or make any collection attempt.
