I filed for bankruptcy a year and a half ago and now my employer is doing mandatory credit and criminal checks. Should I be fearing for my job? Can they demote me?

I wouldn’t expect that an employer would let someone go simply as a result of negative credit history. While this may be one of many factors that could contribute to letting someone go, if it is the only reason I would suggest the employer may not have reasonable cause and could be putting themselves at risk if they relied solely on this one factor. Given that, I would suggest you simply ask the person who will be administering or gathering the credit checks. Be frank, explain your situation, explain your concerns and ask them directly if there is a need for you to be concerned for your position. In my experience it is typically looked upon positively when someone confronts issues and looks for ways to work past them.
