what about credit cards

i have to claim bankrupsy because my ex did and all of the debt that had my name on it came to me. Do I have to claim all of my credit cards even if they are all paid off? Can I keep them to rebuild my credit?

Bankruptcy laws in Canada are quite clear. You must surrender all credit cards when you go bankrupt, even if there is no balance owing on them. (It is considered fraudulent to borrow money from people that don’t know you are bankrupt).

Your trustee will be able to advise you on the best ways to rebuild your credit after your bankruptcy is over.

Capital One will let you have a Secured credit card while you are in Bankruptcy. Home-Trust will issue a Secured Visa after you have been discharged. Both will help you rebuild your credit.
