Solvent As We Blog, but may get sued…

My mother is about to get sued in court. She has absolutely no debts and pays her bills and credit card promptly at the end of each month. She owns her house outright.
The lawsuit, if she looses may be for more than her net worth.
In order to prevent the plaintif from taking her house, would she be able to give it to someone else? I think she could probably do this long before the court date. She has both friends and relatives who could take title to the house, and be trusted with it.

I hope to hear from you soon.

The short answer is no, you cannot “hide” or transfer your assets just before you go bankrupt.

I suggest she talk to a lawyer or a trustee to fully explore her options. It may be possible to keep her house even if she goes bankrupt. A proposal may be another option to avoid bankruptcy altogehter.
