Take a look at the bills when they come in – if both your name and your spouse’s name appear on the bill then you are both responsible for the debt. If only one name appears then that person is 100% responsible for that debt.
If you have loans or lines of credit and you don’t receive as monthly bill you may have to call the lender and ask them who’s name(s) are on the account.
Of course, just because your spouse’s name is on the account doesn’t mean she will help you pay it off. You need to worry about yourself – the lenders have the right to pursue either one of you (or both of you) in order to get paid.
