Can I file for consumer proposal prior to getting my 2011 Notice of Assessment from the CRA?
May 9th, 2012 by Questions
I have the 2009 and 2010 tax returns to file (though likely there isn’t any amount owing to CRA for both years) and was wondering if I can file for consumer proposal prior to submitting my 2011 tax return (i.e. once I get the the NOA’s for both years)?
I only ask because I don’t think I can file my 2011 tax return until I get the Notice of Assessment for the 2009 and 2010 years but I am already feeling the pinch of making the minimum payments on all loans and I was hoping a Trustee could take me on with just the 2010 NOA received as getting the 2011 NOA may take a few more months and I want to file for consumer proposal while I am still current on payments as I don’t want the collection agencies to start calling me up.
Thank you for your time and advice.

For reference, you likely don’t have to wait to file your 2011 , you should file all your returns right away. But regardless with the help of a trustee you can work through filing a consumer proposal and this tax issue. In fact many trustee’s can assist with the tax preparation if it is needed. So you are best to contact a local trustee right away.
