Car Lease/Immigration
March 4th, 2009 by Questions
If you do a consumer proposal can you keep your car? Mine is leased and I only have 11 months left before its paid. Also, I am sponsoring my wife for immigration will doing a consumer proposal prevent me from sponsoring her? You are not allowed to be bankrupt when you sponsor someone, but it says nothing about a consumer proposal.

Typically you don’t loose your car under a proposal. This can depend on the value of the vehicle, the presence of any loans against that vehicle, your ability to afford those payments, but most frequently when a proposal is filed it is set up so you can keep your vehicle.
As for sponsoring your wife for immigration, I have never heard of anyone having problems with sponsorship when you are in a consumer proposal. You are correct that a bankrupt is not allowed to e a sponsor, but there is nothing that I am aware of that prevents someone in a consumer proposal from doing so.
