Yes, when you file for bankruptcy there is immediately a Stay of Proceedings that is put in place. This is legal protection from your unsecured creditors and it removes their right to collect on the debt (i.e. they can’t call, sue, garnish or even charge interest). This is effected the day you file for bankruptcy.
