gst rebates
August 3rd, 2010 by Questions
HI. I was discharged this past June. My trustee told me I would eventually get the gst back however I didn`t receive the one for last month as they had to do stuff one their end before I would get it back. How long does this usually take…..wrapping it up on their end and then getting it from Revenue Canada again?
Thanks

The bad news – your trustee is not required to return your GST until they complete your file. That can take quite sometime as they have to wait for CRA to assess your tax returns (and that is only starting to happen right now).
For the other people reading this posting there is some good news – our firm has stopped taking people’s GST – we just don’t think it is fair and so we waive our right to when you file. If you ask, other trustees might do the same, but ask them BEFORE you file. The law doesn’t require a trustee to take your GST, it’s just what has always been done, well, if enough of you ask, maybe this practice will stop.
Before someone asks, the rules for tax refunds are quite different – they will be paid to your trustee automatically. This was a change that came into effect in 2008 and you just have to live with it. I don’t agree with it, but it is currently the law…
