us bankrupcy, canadian debt
February 18th, 2010 by Questions
filed bankrupcy in WA state last year and was discharged. listed CRA. Because of the age of the debt it was dischargable under us law and the irs was actively collecting for cra untill bk filing. Now CRA says they can still collect debt because the bk was in the states. Is this true?

This is true. You cannot be released from Canadian debt by filing a foreign bankruptcy. The US laws will protect you from collection, but only as long as you stay in the US. Ultimately you are still responsible for this debt just as CRA has said.
