, A licensed trustee said:

Trustees may keep a file open for up to 3 years without providing an explanation – in other words you may be discharged after 9 months (the normal period for a person filing bankruptcy for the first time) and your trustee may keep your file open for another 2 years and 3 months.

Now, this isn’t usually done as your trustee doesn’t get paid in full until they close your file, so they have a pretty good reason to close them as soon as they can.
