If I file for bankruptcy in Canada will that affect my financial standing in the U.S.?
July 23rd, 2008 by Questions
I am considering declaring bankruptcy in Canada. Will this affect my financial standing in the U.S.?
I am moving to the U.S. (where I worked for the past 9 months) for the forseeable future beginning in September. I have no debts in the U.S., and currently have active bank accounts and a credit/check card carrying no balance.
Thanks

There are no interntaional treaties on debt or credit reporting. The only way a bankruptcy filing in Canada might affect you in the US is if on a credit application you are asked “have you eve filed for bankruptcy?” If you file for bankruptcy in Canada and you’re ever asked that question they answer will be “yes”. If you answer “no” and the company finds out about your babnkruptcy in Canada (or whereever else in the world you may have filed) you may be charged with misrepresentation and fraud…
