Leaving the country
May 9th, 2008 by Questions
How long do I ahve to stay in the country if I decalre bankrupcy. I lost my job and is very difficult to get my life in order (which drove me to bankrupcy). I was offered assistance from my relatives in the US but I don want to make things right under the bankrupcy act.

There is no obligation to stay in Canada after you have filed a bankruptcy as most of the duties can be completed from abroad. However, I find it is much easier on you if you finish up the counselling sessions before you leave, make sure you keep the trustee informed of where you are moving to, and arrange for the payments to be continued from your new location (i.e. mail in money orders or cheques).
