Who can find out that I went bankrupt?
I would like to know if bankruptcy files are public information. I understand that it will show up on a credit report. However, can anyone, potential employers for instance, access this information or is it protect by privacy laws? Thanks!

Unfortunately, it is public information – if someone is willing to pay the search fee they may go the government’s site and look up any name to see if it is in the records. They have to look for a specific name, but it can be done.
Having said that, it is very rarely done – if an employer wants to know if you’ve ever been bankrupt they will simply ask you (and it is illegal not to tell them if you have).
