Wages Garnished?

Hello,

My boyfriend and I are common law, and he is considering bankruptcy. All the debts are in his name, but since he has been laid off and is currently collecting EI, is my income in jeopardy of being garnished?

If all the debts are in your boyfriend’s name, and you do not have any joint accounts with your boyfriend, then both your income and your bank accounts will be safe from the actions of his creditors. The responsibility for debts and your relationship status are separate issues. For you to be held responsible for his debts the creditors would need you to have signed on their documents.
