Canadian working in the US?

I am a Canadian citizen working and living in the US. I have Canadian debt from when I still lived in Canada which I am finding hard to manage. Am I able to declare bankruptcy in Canada, while living and working in the US? If so – how will this affect my US credit rating? Will my US creditors know of my bankruptcy here?

Technically speaking to be eligible to file bankrutpcy you must have been a resident of Canada within the last year. However, I have seen some situations where permission has been granted by the Superintendent of Bankrutpcy even if you are outside that window.

So what you need to do is contact a trustee in the area of Canada you last resided and see if they are in a position where they can help.
