Separation and Student Loans

A couple were married. A couple both worked until the wife decided that she did not want to continue in the line of work that she was doing, so she went to school. Student loan/loans were obtained. Couple separates after wife obtains job (thanks to new career training). Husband is now being sued for the amount of the student loan. What can be done about this? Is not the wife liable as well…after all, she is the one benefitting from the education. Please advise.

This all relates to who signed on the student loans. The way the law works is it really makes no difference who benefited from the money, but who signed the original agreement. If the husband was the only party that signed, he is the only party responsible, but if both husband and wife signed both will be liable.
