Collection agent with no information
I had a collector contact me in Alberta regarding a loan from Ontario. This ghost loan was from March of 1998. I explained to this collector that from my recollection had not taken out this loan. I also questioned as to why I was being contacted 7 years later. I asked this collector if he could provide me with details. He simply told me I owed the money and it was up to me to pay it and if I thought it was fraud than I would have to investigate it myself and prove fraud. I basically at this point did nothing. I figured there was no way this could be a valid phone call. I received another call and again I asked for more informatin regarding this man’s claims of me having a loan. Again he told me that he did not have to provide me with any information. I did receive in the mail a general form that had no information on it except that I should contact EQUIFAX. Today this collector has called again. He asked for me I avoided the call but took a message. He was calling to advise me that he was going to be sending a sheriff to my work place. I don’t work! This time I called the finance company this so called loan had originated from. I called in Alberta and they told me to call Ontario. I called an Ontario office and they forwarded me to the company’s recovery office. When I called the recovery office they had no record of my name or any other known names or of anything matching my social insurance number. The gentleman at the finace company suggested that I call this collector back and tell him to call them directly. The key to all this though is he also told me that the debt if it is existant should be cleared regardless because it has been over 7 years. Today I am contacting Equifax for my credit report to see what is transpiring on my credit report but in the mean time how do I put a stop to these phone calls from this collector?

There is virtually no way to stop blatant harrassment. Since the creditor has already told you that you don’t owe them the money, when they call again I agree that you should refer the collection agent directly to the creditor.
If they continue to call, you can report the collector to the Ministry of Government Services in Ontario.
This could be a scam.
