Certainly, the one has nothing to do with the other, BUT don’t be surprised if whichever trustees you speak to try and convince you not to file. While you are on assistance you are “creditor proof” -your welfare payment cannot be garnisheed or seized by your creditors. Presumably you have better things to do with the little bit of money the government gives you each month than pay for a bankruptcy. In the end it will be your choice, but most trustees will suggest you wait until you return to work.
