Student Loan after bankpruptcy

May 7th, 2011 by Questions

Hello, thank you for this blog – it is very informative! I claimed bankruptcy with 40K in student loan debt that will be discharged in November as it was greater than 7 years (12 to be exact). During bankruptcy I lost my job and as such was approved for the Second Career Program and am returning to school. The Second Career funding does not cover all my financial needs to support my family – am I able to apply for Student loans again? I am older, more mature and am not looking to fund my complete school requirements – is there a time frame for applying to OSAP after bankruptcy?

You need to speak to the financial aid officer at your school, but you shouldn’t be “hopeful”. We’re not OSAP experts, but my recollection is if you have defaulted on loans in the past (and they include bankruptcy as a form of default) you are not eligible for loans in the future.
