About half my debt is owed to a family member. If I claim bankruptcy can this be erased?

Legally they ceratinly can – when you are discharged from bankruptcy then you cannot be compelled to repay any of your debts.

Having said that, once you have been discharged you may decide to repay any/all of your debts. That’s a decision you have to make and people often try and repay debts to family – just make sure you don’t make any payments during your bankruptcy or you can get into trouble.
