what to do when your debt is in one province and you live in another?

My husband and I lost our house in Ontario so had to move. We now live in Quebec and feel we have no other choice but to file bankruptcy. Do we file with a trustee in Quebec because we live here or do we file in Ontario because that is where our debt is?

You have the right to do either. You may file in Ontario if that is where the majority of your debts are, or you may file in Quebec since that is where you now reside.

Depending on where you are in Quebec, why don’t you contact a trustee in Ottawa or Hull – someone familiar with the laws of both provinces and they can advise you on which will make more sense for you.
