I am intending to file for divorce in the new year, and we have major consumer debt. Would it be better to apply for a consumer proposal before filing divorce or after?

A lot depends on how amicable the divorce is likely to be and whether or not you plan on filing together (jointly) or by yourself. The less amicable the more should consider filing by yourself. Frankly, the best thing to do is ask the lawyer handling your divorce whether it is to your advantage to have less debt before or after the divorce has started.
