I’ve lost my job and I’m on E.I.

I was having trouble keeping up with my debt and now I’ve been laid off. Can you file for a Consumer Proposal while on E.I.?

You have the right to file a consumer proposal while you are on EI, but most trustees will council against it. They will tell you it is better/safer to wait untiol you find secure employment so you have a better idea of your long term income. EI will run out in 6 months and if you haven’t found work how will you make the required payments? The proposal may fail and then you wasted that money…

Just be careful and think through all of your options before you decide to commit to a multi-year payment plan.
