Will declaring bankruptcy in Ireland affect my credit record?

August 17th, 2015 by Questions

I immigrated to Canada a couple of years ago and it looks as though I will have to claim bankruptcy in my home country. Will declaring bankruptcy in Ireland affect my credit record here in Canada? I am a permanent resident of Canada in case that will make a difference. Thank you.

Credit records are done on a national basis. This means that only credit in Canada will affect your Canadian credit report (which is why it can sometimes be difficult for people new to Canada to obtain their first forms of credit). As such, a bankruptcy in Ireland would not affect your credit report here in Canada. However, sometimes on credit applications there will be a question regarding bankruptcy. It is always very important to be honest on those and as such if the question asks about a bankruptcy in Canada or elsewhere, that may affect your ability to obtain credit even though it doesn’t affect your credit report.
