senior mom (80 plus) in debt

September 15th, 2013 by Questions

Our mom seems to be confused lately and orders things through the mail that she can not pay for. What can we do to help her.

The first thing you need to do is make sure you mom is safe – if she is showing signs of dementia you have to make certain she is not a danger to herself or others. Refer to her doctor or a local senior’s centre for advice on this.

In regards to her “shopping” – as long as she has control of her finances she has the right to order whatever she wants. If you want to stop her you may need to obtain a Power of Attorney” over her finances. At the very least take her credit cards away…

Good luck – none of this is going to be much fun and it will only get worse.
