contributing to RRSP post bankruptcy

November 30th, 2009 by Questions

I was discharged from bankruptcy on Nov 24/09 and I`m wondering if I`m able to contribute to my RRSP, and if so, would I be allowed to keep my refund – or at least contribute to my RRSP to avoid having to pay as much tax. I`m not even clear if my trustee does the Tax return for the period Nov24-Dec31/09. Everything I read says they `may`
Thank you

The RRSP’s are not at risk, you will be able to keep any contributions that you make.

However, the taxes are a different story. Any tax refunds for the year you filed bankruptcy are lost as part of the bankruptcy. So if you filed in 2009 the 2009 tax refund is lost.
