In the province of Alberta, when you file for bankruptcy, you are able to retain a vehicle with up to $5,000 equity. So as long as the current market value of the vehicle less the amount owing against the vehicle (if anything) is less than $5,000, then you can retain the vehicle (of course if there is a loan against the vehicle you would also have to continue to keep up on those loan payments as well).
