My fiance is filing bankruptcy tomorrow.  Embarrassed We are both nervous. Nervous about being bankrupt, nervous about life afterwards and the future. Will we have this hex on our names the rest of our lives?  We rent and would one day love to own a house. We are also embarrased it had to come to this.

Filing bankruptcy is definitely a sign that you and/or your partner made some "mistakes" along the way, ones that are worth learning from and taking responsibility for. Have you sat down and had a serious discussion about what you learned from this? If you havent done that individuality or as a couple, I would say yes, be nervous, because perhaps you think it just "happened" to you. It didnt, it happened FOR you. Why?

Also... Whats feeling embarrassed, nervous and guilty doing to benefit you both? Again, those feelings arent really useful beyond learning your lessons and moving forward.

I filed bankruptcy a year ago and it was one of the best things I ever did. The relief I got from the stress made space for me to think clearly about how to be wiser and to make better choices. People all over North America are going bankrupt, and while it's not ideal, its certainly not the end or anything to feel ashamed of.

Do a Google search for people who filed bankruptcy- theres lots of success stories. As for the rest of your fears- I suggest you and your partner read "start late finish rich" A great book.

Best!

Hello.  From a mortgage perspective, after you come out of your bankruptcy and gets discharged, having a substantial down payment would get you the property you need.  Focus and work your way one day at a time.  Do not pressure yourself to own a property when you are still in bankruptcy.  This is a situation when most people do not tell anyone about this issues.
This site will help you get through it.  I have seen the encouraging words most people share to others in this site.  Good luck and stay strong.
